With Class II-III rapids and a minimum age of just 6, Bighorn Sheep Canyon is the perfect introduction to whitewater for families with kids.
If you're looking for a family-friendly rafting trip that still delivers real whitewater thrills, Bighorn Sheep Canyon on the Arkansas River is your answer. With Class II-III rapids suitable for ages 6 and up, this stunning canyon offers the perfect blend of excitement and accessibility.
Why Families Love Bighorn Sheep Canyon
The section features two standout Class III rapids, Three Rocks and Spike Buck, that provide genuine adrenaline without being overwhelming for first-timers or younger rafters. Between the rapids, calm pools offer chances to swim, float, and take in the breathtaking canyon scenery. At water flows above 4,000 CFS (typically late May through early June), these rapids can push toward Class IV, so timing matters for families with young children.
The Route
The Bighorn Sheep Canyon section begins at Pinnacle Rock Recreation Site off Highway 50 and travels 8.7 miles downstream to Parkdale Recreation Site. The average gradient is 33 feet per mile: enough for exciting whitewater without dangerous drops. Named rapids along the way include 3 Rocks, 5 Points, Spike Buck, Double Dip, Shark's Tooth, Texas Creek, and the playfully named Lose Your Lunch.
Trip Options
Half-day trips run about 3 hours on the water, while full-day adventures extend to approximately 6 hours with a riverside lunch break. For families with very young children (under 6), ask about the Bighorn Family Float: a milder stretch with Class II-II+ rapids and swimming stops.
The Scenery
Located in the Arkansas River Valley between Cañon City and Salida, the canyon showcases sunny, open landscapes with striking red rock cliffs and rolling hills. The canyon is named after its iconic residents: majestic bighorn sheep frequently spotted grazing or climbing along the rocky ledges. Keep your eyes on the canyon walls for these incredible animals.
When to Go
The rafting season runs May through early September, with late June through July offering ideal conditions: warm air and water temperatures combined with exciting but manageable rapids. For the gentlest experience with youngest kids, book for late July or August when water levels have mellowed.
